2000 mercury mountaineer ward 3-25-13
When driving from 35 to 50mph you feel a hesitation or jerk like quite frequently, seems like its getting worse...could it be electrical or transmission or ???
Re: 2000 mercury mountaineer Phil Feinstein 3-25-13
At 40MPH the torque converter lock up engages. If you feel a "Stutter" at this speed, then the TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) or the TCC wiring is involved.

Check the fluid level and condition as a first step. Have you had the fluid changed recently? Trans fluid should always be "Pink with no stink". If it is brown or full of particles, you could be looking at a rebuild.

Your vehicle is EEC5 and even if the check engine light does not come on, there should be a code set in the computer if this problem is electrical in nature. If you have a burnt up TCC, you may or may not get a code (TCC not engaged, etc.). If this is burnt or leaking clutch packs or a failing pump, you will not see a code.

Finally, 2000 was 12 and a half years ago; when was your last tune up?

Hope that helps!
