Temperature gauge issues Joe 8-26-09
1991 Geo. Boy motorhome - 454 chev engine.
Problem is my temp. gauge doesn't move. So far, I have replaced the thermostat & the temperature sensor. The damn gauge still doesn't move. My first question : Is there a second sensor unit on my motor because the m.home is equipped with a high temp. sensor that turns on my fans to cool the motor.
My second question : Can I take out the sensor on the block & install a Manual temperature gauge?

Help....I am planning to take a vacation in a couple of weeks. Thanks. This site helped me with a different issue a couple of years back - same m.home (different hmmmm problem) You guys are great. Joe S.

In a rig of your vintage I would expect 2 sensors for water temp: one for the gauge and one for the EFI set up. If you have a feedback carb you may or may not have a second sensor.

It's very easy to tell them apart. The gauge sender has only one wire and the EFI sensor has 2 or 3 (depending on what the EFI needs).

There are a couple of reasons why the temp gauge wouldn't work. The way it works is that the sender completes a connection to ground, so resistance to ground is was the gauge is reading. If the sender is brand new, you can test it using an ohmmeter (resistance goes down as the engine get hotter; you can measure at the sender and any bare metal). If the sender is good, you only have 2 places to check for a problem: the wire from the sender and the gauge itself. I've run into exactly *ONE* instance when the problem was the plastic circuit board connecting the gauge, but that's a possibility as well.

What part of this will entail is removing the gauge cluster from the dash, so be prepared. A wiring diagram helps a lot, but if you can see the wires you're tracing you can do without.

Hope that helps!
