Re: 350 chevy carb. by Jacob
Post New Message Ok So i am driving my Chevy El Camino (350 crate woot woot) anyways while driving on the highway the RPM meter begins to dance around 1000 to 3000 but no change in sound or speed. As i slow down it kicks a lil but only for about 2 kicks. I have since drove it for about a week and while driving up the hill I live on The Car drops to maybe 300 RPM’s and wants to die so I put my foot on the gas about 1/2 throttle and it shoots right back up no issues, well I pull down the hill and I take my foot off the throttle to let it coast down the hill and it dies right as my foot leaves the throttle. So i push my el camino home, 3 blocks woohoo..... and it won’t start. Turns over, battery good lights work etc. But when I take a look at the QuadraJunk (jet) it looks BONE DRY. So i put some fuel in the carb and might i add steam rose as i did, got in gave it a choke and it started right up and idled at 600 (perfect spec for 86 elco) so I’m thinking wtf and I put it in drive to take it home and as soon as it drops into drive, DEAD! So i sang a sweet french tune probably killing off many puppies haha and I call my friend to pick me up and drive me down to the Gas station. Even tho I knew I had 10 gal in the tank I wanted to make sure. So i put 5 gal in the tank and put some more gas in the carb, once again steam rose. So i tried to start it and the damn thing wont start. So as I sit on the starter I push on the throttle, Starts right up no issues and idles perfect again so I say humm I guess I did run out of gas.... well I drop it in drive and it dies. So I flip off my friend that said I ran out and gas and I try to start it again. Once again it only started when I push at least 1/2 down on throttle. So as soon as I drop it in drive I push on the throttle and it drives all the way home and as soon as I take my foot off, it sputters than dies. So I started it again the same way and I rev it and it revs fine everything going well, I drop it in Drive and it dies.

I have checked connections and I am at a loss. The carb is brand new and I really am tired of spending so much money on simple issues.

So my question is simple What is causing it to die while in drive unless I have throttle held down?
