86 toyota 4cyl.2.4 litre engine misses, burns gas inefficiently tom 7-31-09
My engine runs great and never stalls but bumps and misses at idle and steadily worsens slowly over time. I can hear and feel the cylinders smoothly run most of the way up when i push the accelerator pedal all the way down, but there is some misfiring there too; when i put it in gear the acceleration is smooth and powerful most of the time, with only occasional misfire. new ngk plugs seem to help for a short while but they are always coated shortly after i put them in. i should say the air cond. unit is bad and the belt is off, and the exhaust is leaking a few feet after the engine.
can any toyota expert please help.
thanks, Tom

Sounds like you have a vacuum leak, especially if the plugs come out dry and black. If the plugs are wet and black, you need to test compression. Also if the oil goes black shortly after an oil change (within 1000 miles), you need to check compression.

'86 should be using some type of carburetor. When the rough running starts, check to see if the carb is dribbling fuel at idle.

Hope that helps!

Check all your spark plugs and make sure they are properly gapped. also check your wires. make sure they are in good condition and connected snugly to the spark plugs and distributor cap. if all is good then check your distributor cap and rotor. one might not be catching spark.

Thank you phil and sami, it sounds like it is a vacuum leak and maybe compression, since the oil goes dark fairly soon, although it doesn't go really black for about 2000 miles, and a lot of hard driving, and plugs come out dry, but are almost silver, like the aluminum engine is depositing on the plugs, or the last owner put something in it. but plenty of power and runs so smooth now that i figured out how to adjust the idle! will check the carb and clean it, so thanks very much.
