Cooling unit for a Dometic fridge. Replaceable? Kelley 7-2-09
If one knew that the cooling unit was bad in a Dometic 4.0 or 5.0 cf fridge, how difficult would it be to replace it, and how much could i expect to pay to have it done?, or would it make more sense (money wise) just to replace the fridge? Ive priced a new one for $780, (not installed), and a cooling unit on e-bay for about $400 + shipping. Any advice?

Ohhhh boy. E bay cooling unit, probably a rebuilt with warranty a million miles away. We experiance about a 40% re-failure rate on rebuilts. We try very hard not to use or sell them. The change over invoves tearing the fridge out of the wall, pulling all the door panels and hard ware off so the fridge will sit face down without damaging anything. Literally tearing the entire rear of the fridge apart and ripping the cooling unit out of the back and reinstalling. (we have had to use a tie down fixture and jack-all in the past) A tech who has done a bunch can do one in 3 hrs allowing it will fit out the door. Doing one in the trailer complicates it a bunch. You decide, how old is your current control system and electronics vrs the cost of new? Good Luck
