Rear drive axle swap JOE WHITTLE 6-7-09
I HAVE A 1966 IHC SCHOOL BUS CONVERSION HAD GAS MOTOR NOW HAS 3208 CAT WITH ALLISON AND STOCK REAR END. IS REAR ENGINE. CAN I PUT A STANDARD AIR RIDE REAR END IN BRAKE TO BRAKE WILL IT RUN BACKWARDS WITHOUT SELF DETONATION
Re: rear drive axle swap wrench 6-7-09
Won't work what ever you do, too many thing are different, you would also end up with 4 speed in reverse & 1 speed foward. better change the gear in the housing. You had probably a 5.XX ratio, & need to go to 3.XX-4.2X ratio.
An other option is to buy a newer transit RE & move your conversion on the newer chassis.

I APPRECIATE THE INPUT MY MAIN CONCERN IS THE CUT OF THE RING AND PINION GEARS AND, OR THE BEARING TORQUE LOAD?
I AM A DIESEL TECH AND HAVE DONE MY SHARE OF FABRICATION, OR FINACIAL MODIFICATION HOWEVER YOU WANT TO DEFINE IT. LAST YEAR A CUSTOMER WHO WAS AT THE TIME A TWO TRUCK OUTFIT, LANDED A CONTRACT THAT WOULD PUT HIS BOOKS IN THE BLACK IF ALL WENT AS PLANNED. IT DIDN'T AND HIS LEAD TRUCK A 75 PETE SPREAD ENGINE PARTS OVER HALF THE JOB SITE. I HAD A 93 FREIGHTLINER WRECK WITH A GOOD DDEC SERIES 60 COMPUTER CONTROLLED ENGINE. I SWAPPED THE OLD 8V-72 OUT WIRED FOR COMPUTER CONTROLS BUILT ENGINE AND TRANS MOUNTS AND HAD HIM BACK ON THE JOB IN SIX DAYS! THE GUYS AT DETROIT HAD A POOL THAT IT WOULD NEVER RUN! OF COURSE I LOST MY SHIRT BUT HOW MUCH IS BRAGGING RIGHTS WORTH? MY POINT IS ITS ALL NUTS AND BOLTS AND I SURE WOULD LIKE THE AIR RIDE.
