Hi,
Ihave 1976 gmc motorhome 26 feet.I would like to replace the motor.I am wondering if i could replace it with a 4.6 cadilac eldorado nortstar motor and transmission.Or is there any diesel engine i could use.
Hello,
When I bought my Winnebago Elandan with a broken engine I had allot of ambition. I found a 2001 Duramax Diesel w/ Allison transmission from a wrecked truck. I researched what it would take to get it installed and realized I had neither the time or money to complete it. So I sold the motor & tranny and my mobile mechanic and I rebuilt the stock motor transmission etc. My family and I just made our 1400 mile maden (long) journey in her last weekend. Had a fuel problem, but made it there and back! If I'd attampted the swap, I believe it would still be disabled in the driveway.

I was a GM technician for many years and currently work for a truck manufacturer. The 425 transmission is the only unit that could take the torque required to move the unit. The only engines that would bolt up to the original 425 transmission would be the Olds 455, olds or large Cadillac versions of that time frame. I think most other GM engines would need some modification to the bolt up. You possible could put a Olds 350 diesel in the unit but you would need to turbocharge the engine to get the power you would need and that would take an experienced technician to get the fuel volumes correct to control the heat produced. Bottom line is the 455 Olds engine is an exceptional engine and if tuned correctly and the coach has good tires and aligned correctly will produce 12 mgg on the highway. I would fix or replace the 455 if you have problem. If you have any question on what I said on the transmission, do some checking on the size of the power tranfer chain on the rear on the 425 transmission used on the motorhomes. The one on the Northstar unit you are talking about would look like it is for a mini-van.
I have a 1977 GMC that has a slight knock when started. Goes away afterwards. Runs smooth, good oil pressure, no power or temperature issues. No idea how many miles on coach/engine. Mechanic think it is a cracked piston skirt (spelling?) Any thoughts? Easiest way to pull the engine? Original 455.
