I have an onan generator on my 1990 Bounder motorhome. Generator worked fine in August and a month later generator will run as long as start button is pressed, as soon as you let go of button generator stops running.
I have tried a new fuel filter, changed spark plugs and filled motorhome with fuel and changed oil. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks. Richard
I have a onan generator model #4kyfa26100h and the board i think is bad the board # is 300-4923 is there someway i can bypass the board to make it work? thanks rick
I have a 1989 Bounder with a 6.5 onan generator. It starts but after two to three seconds it stops running. I can start it again but but will stop. I had it checked out and Metro RV stated it needed to be rebuilt but I really don't think it does I don't see any smoke coming out of the exhaust. I live in Santa Ana, ca. Is there a Generator mechanic that can fix my problem.
There is a fail safe on the oil pressure switch that shuts down the generator when there is no oil pressure It is over ridden on start up and will allow engine to run as long as the button is on. Check this pressure switch
Make sure the chip board and everything around it are bolted/screwed down and not loose. This happened with my son's generator and he was telling me he went to take out the chip/computer board and found things were not properly bolted down and had come loose. Include all ignition parts in the inspection.
Other issues can be 1) battery voltage below 9V check batteries and all connections; processor will abort start at less than 6V cranking power 2) disconnect genset control connnector and insure integrity of pins and connection 3)check fuel lines for damage/no cracks allowed
Check fault codes: control switch on the genset will blink if fault shutwown. It will blink 3 or 4 times repeatly. Three blinks is a service fault; press STOP once to cause a two-digit second level fault code to blink; the tow digit code consists of 1, 2, 3 or 4 blinks, a brief pause, and the 1 to 9 blinks; example is fault dode 24 consists of blink-blink...pause...blink-blink-blink-blink. Fault codes stop blink after 5 minutes. To clear codes press stop once for level 1 fault or twice for level 2 code fault. Press stop three times within five seconds to restore blinking.
This came from the service manual'
Once get fault code list on web and ask what that fault code means.
Good luck.
Thanks for all the help, but still have the same problem. Changed oil again, replaced fuel line and filter, changed plugs, motor home is full of fuel. Not sure of how to check fault codes because the generator does not have any lights on genset board. Checked the overspeed on the carb. Is there anything besides the control panel to buy or is there another part you think I need. Thanks alot.
Richard
Experienced many years of working with Onan Generator systems, in the military. Never experienced anything like this "ONAN GENERATOR FROM HELL"! (Model #4.0BF-3CR/16000B)
Recently received an RV that originally came in for not running. Fixed the fuel line, establishing fuel pressure.
Replaced numerous wires, establishing ignition.
replaced (K2 relay & Oil Pressure Switch), establishing ignition.
Now, this antiquated P.O.S. "Starts & Runs", but shuts down as soon as you release the "Start Switch".
Replaced the oil pressure switch, start switch, diode, k2 relay, ohm tested the ignition coil, and numerous wiring connections. Many of the wires were brittle and broke on contact. Still trying to get this generator keep running after the start switch has been released. Thanks
My onan gen4000 runs for about 30 min then shuts down. If I try to restart it right a way it will not but if I wait for about 5 to 10 min it will start and run for a short while. It seems to cut off when it gets hot
I shut gen off when I got fuel, when I pulled out I started gen I forgot I had air running it kicked breaker in mh and on gen. now it will start but dies as soon as you let off start switch????? cant get it to stay running it is a onen 6.5
My Onan 5.5 kw Onan generator won't stay running. I do have a Hertz / Fq. meter. Generator starts fine, has 63 hertz jumps to 69.5 afer a few seconds the generator truns off. I think my control broad 5374 is bad there are no adjustments on it. The replacement part is $350 is there a way to adjust the rpms, to keep the Fq to 60 Hz wihtout replacing the control broad?
Thank you:
I have an Onan 4000. It would not stay running. I changed the spark plugs and got fresh gas in the tank, still no better. FINALY i took the little white platic altitude adjustment switch off of the needle screw. (It is actualy a cap on the needle screw.) I ran the screw in and out...so as to clear any build up of sediment. Then I backed it completly out. Let the fuel run out for a bit. Put it back. ( to approximatly the same setting that it was previously.) Sarted the gen and run the screw in until it just started to stall. Then backed it out 1/2 turn. Let it warm. UP! It has been running like a champ since!!!
The Onan Brand Generator is a pretty reliable one, and most problems relate to either setting idle for too long, dirty air/fuel filters, fouled spark plugs, and just plain buying low octane gas. My first experience I assumed that I wasn't getting any spark, so changed the plugs, and replaced the coil. Well, the big buck coil wasn't the problem, the plugs weren't all that bad, and all the wiring, fuzes, and circuit board were perfect, so what now?? We crimped the gas line where it comes into the generator, and disconnected the gas line, and purged the gas line from the main storage tank to the generator for a gallon or two, and the stuff was not only yellow in color, but smelled like turpentine. Even when poured on the ground we tried to ignite it, and it wouldn't. To go with this, we replaced the fuel and air filter, and nothing. We decided to disconnect the inlet line from the fuel filter to the carburator, and use lots of carb cleaner and compressed air which must have dislodged something in the jets, and as to this date, as long as it is run once a month at a minimum, if only for 10 minutes or so, to purge all that stationary gas from the incoming line, charge the auxillary battery, and use of a gas additive to prevent any gas problems associated with sitting during the winter, it still fires first try. Helpful Hint: You buy cheap gas, you get what you paid for. Better gas=less maintenance on your generator, as well as the rig your draggin' it around in!!! 87 octane at a minumum, read your owners manual!!! I wouldn't run 85 in my lawnmower!!! Hope this helps some of you.
Bob, did you ever get the codes?? My 4KW won't start unless I manually choke it, (close butterfly) then it runs, but surges for a while and stops. Trouble code is 14?? Where do we find the code identifiers? HELP!!
My onan 6.5 was running and I had both a/c on and then it quit. I have for sure 7/8 tank of gas. it will run with the start switch push in but stop as soon as the switch is releasd. need help. thanks
