Transfercase randy allyn hood 11-6-08
I have a 96 ranger 4x4 that sounds like the right hub is grinding in 2wd except its shift on the fly so theres no hub gears to grind. Im not familiar with transfercases but the bresk down of case shows a lock out gear for the 2 to 4wd thats moved by the shift motor. does anyone know if these things can get weak or become worn that the gear will float against the the othe gear it locks into ? it works fine in 4wd but 2wd sounds like two gears barely touching. can the magnetic pull back become weak or fould to cause this or is there a nother reason this could happen?

Yes, it's actually quite common for the transfer case motor to become weak or seize altogether. The newer shift motors last longer, but it seems to be endemic to the design.

Hope that helps!
