I have a 85 Ford F 250 p/u that I pull a 30ft fith-wheel camper with. Last summer we never had any problems, but this summer it has started heating up. I have changed the radiator, fan clutch (with factory ford part)thermostat and gauge(manual) When towing at slow speeds it never heats up. But heats up at higher speeds 55-60mph. The only thing that hasn't been changed is the waterpump, could that be the problem?
I would first check your distributor spark timing advances, both centrifugal and vacuum. This is easily done using a timing light that shows both degrees and RPM. I had an '84 F250 w 460 that had an overheat problem while towing, cured it by installing a fan clutch eliminator, which drives the fan constantly. A bit noisy, but very effective. It is also possible that your timing chain has stretched, throwing off your base timing. I assume that you do the old trick of turning the heater on full blast with all windows down in order to drop the engine heat.
You might want to check for partially plugged exhaust(heat riser if it has one)(plugged cats if it has them) or a muffler problem. My 85 Ford memory isn't up to snuff! See if any part....especially the front part of your exhaust is discolored. Nothing works as well as when it is new...and sometimes just an auxillary electric fan in front of the radiator could help.
Also, a lower radiator collapsing at higher speeds could slow down the flow of coolant through the radiator, not likely, but a possibility.
