94 Ford Explorer..4x4, not working Mikey 3-28-08
I have a 1994 Ford Explorer, the 4x4 is not working. The lights come on in the dash, and it sounds like its "locking in"

I'm wondering..if the vehicle is on a hoist, with no friction againest the wheels (a road) will all of the wheels spin in 4x4?

Also wondering..if one of the front hubs is working, and one isnt, do you get 4x3?

I replaced an obviously broken hub with one I bought off e-bay, and things arent working...

Is there something really simple that needs to be done with hubs are replaced to make everything work?

Any suggestions?

Mike

If the vehicle is on a lift with no friction against the wheels, egaging 4WD *WILL* work and all 4 wheels should spin.

If one front hub isn't working, you get RWD; Both hubs need to lock or the front differential will just spin (Ford stock isn't a locking diff)

There's a really easy way to test if the front hubs are locking. With the transfer case in 2WD high and the vehicle on ther ground, spin the front driveshaft clockwise. The hubs should lock and the driveshaft should stop spinning. If the driveshaft spins or you hear a click and the driveshaft still spins but has more resistance you have a problem with one or both of your front hubs not locking.

Hope that helps!
