The Archway Monument, just off of Interstate 80 at Kearney, Neb. exit 272 welcomes travelers to an adventure that transports them back in time—to an era when covered wagons, hand-pulled carts, and trains first crossed the prairies. The exhibit, spanning 160 years of American history and patriotism, lasts approximately one hour. The scenic drive to the monument winds past small lakes and teepees and features picnic and hiking areas to extend the experience.
Since opening on June 9, 2000, The Great Platte River Road Archway Monument has received many awards and honors.
- The International Themed Entertainment Association awarded a THEA to the Archway Monument for Attraction of the Year 2001.
- The National Parks Service certified the Archway for its preservation of the Oregon, Mormon and California Trails and the Pony Express.
- The American Bus Association chose Cranefest 2003 as one of the top 100 festivals in the United States.
- Cranefest 2003 was also chosen as Nebraska’s Outstanding Event for 2003 by Nebraska’s Travel and Tourism Department.
- The Archway Monument is prominently featured in the Jack Nicholson movie "About Schmidt" which opened in December 2003.
