If you're considering renting an RV from CRUISE AMERICA, RV RENTAL & SALES (www.cruiseamerica.com), you may want to
think twice.
I put down a $300 deposit to rent an RV from this company, and spent a week making vacation and flight plans with my friends based on that deposit. A week later, I received a letter from
CRUISE AMERICA stating the company had decided unilaterally to cancel my reservation.
The reason: apparently, I had made the mistake of inquiring about the insurance package CRUISE AMERICA offers with its rentals. Essentially, I tried calling a number of representatives
on their 800 # line, and received a different story about insurance
coverage each time. When I asked to see something in writing, they got huffy, and referred me to their insurance company.
The next week, I received a terse letter from CRUISE AMERICA stating they had canceled my reservations. When I called for details, their representative told me they didn't appreciate me making inquiries into the insurance package offered with their
RV's, and had decided to cancel my reservations without my consent.
Shocked, I told the CRUISE AMERICA representative I had purchased a non-refundable airline ticket based on my
reservations and that this surprise cancellation would hurt not only myself but my friends as well. I also had no way to rent another comparable RV at the off-beat, pick-up location my friends and I had selected for our rendezvous. (I'd already made an extensive check with other, local RV dealers before I'd made the deal with CRUISE AMERICA. There was nothing available that could have even remotely suited our needs.)
The CRUISE AMERICA response: tough luck.
Bottom line: know that if you make inquiries into CRUISE AMERICA's insurance coverage, the company may decide unilaterally to cancel your reservations without your permission.
