It has been recommended that we tow a vehicle behind our 21" camper, but since we're new to RV'ing we're not really comfortable with having this extra "thing" dragging behind us. How do you manage without? Are bicycles enough? Is towing a car a matter of convenience or necessity?
We tow a 4 door S10 Blazer (Service Vehicle) as we have the carrying capacity and we don't want to drive the coach to go get groceries. A towed vehicle gives you the ability to set up camp and then go sight seeing for the day. You will want to do some homework as you are doing now by asking others about this. First find out how much weight you can put behind your RV. This will determine the size of the towed. Then you will want a tow bar and brake assist equipment. It is recommended that you do not back up with a towed vehicle hooked up (you can back straight back for a short distance; no turns). Good luck and enjoy!
Many cities offer public transportation such as buses and taxis and that coupled with a bicycle has given us tons of freedom and no need for a "toad". We've gotten along just fine without a car and getting rid of the car has reduced our monthly expenses dramatically which gives us more time for playing and less time at work :)
We towed a Blazer when full-timing with our large Foretravel motorhome. BUT...if you are comfortable in a small coach [Safari Trek, or Class C] it may not be necessary. Certainly, it's nice to be able to hook up at a camp site and then drive away without having to unhook but there are just as many reasons for not towing, I think. We did travel for six months in a 27 foot class C without a 'toad' and it worked out fine. NOTE: If you need to carry golf clubs, the 'toad' is necessary!
