Water Heater Polly 12-5-10
Hello. I recently acquired a 1981 Komfort line 5th wheel. The water heater was working for the first month and then quit. I had the thermo-coupler replaced, twice...with a "universal" one. The pilot will come on as long as you hold the lighting button in the "on" position, but as soon as you let go, it goes out. There is no getting the heater to actually come on and stay on, just the pilot light. The gas works in the rest of the unit and so I am wondering if I need a specific thermo-coupler vs. the "universal" one. The water heater model number is VSSRV-10X. It is a direct vent water heater. PLEASE HELP. I am living in this unit w/o hot water and am desperate for help. THANK YOU. P.

You may have the wrong thermocouple. Most water heaters can use a universal one, but in rare cases some require a specific milivolt to function. In most cases if changing the thermocouple does not work and you are sure the pilot flame is heating the thermocouple and the pilot goes out when you release the button after a minute or so, you can assume the gas valve itself is bad. If this is the case in your situation you will probably find the most economical solution will be replacing the complete heater.
